Synopsis
After a party gone wrong, Vince, a bully among his peers, must deal with the reality behind his toxic behavior. However, his path to redemption will cost him the thing he holds most dear, his closest relationship.
Inspiration
This short film was initially inspired by a scene from "Back To The Future 2" when Marty McFly is watching Biff get yelled at home by his family. Watching Biff, a bully, getting bullied and belittled by his family was amusing, and sad at the same time. I immediately wanted to know what Biff’s story was like before that moment. The idea of focusing on the bully’s side of the story instead of the victim’s was compelling. Maybe the bully wasn’t always a bully… Maybe the bully was originally a victim… This was the main driver in writing "To Vince From Dad." I wanted to explore the world in which a bully may reside and what could lay behind their toxic behavior. In that, we may find some sympathy for bullies despite their mistakes.
The short film was later selected to be featured in the Summer 2023 Oregon Short Film Festival and won the award for Best Relationship Drama. We all felt very fortunate to be recognized for our work on this project.

This is the animatic for scenes 3-5 in "To Vince From Dad." I created this to help gauge how the pacing was working, whether the shots looked right, and how the drama worked. The scene changed significantly in the finished film.
Storyboards
Storyboards were imperative for me to work out each scene visually before the day of shooting. Although in some scenes I followed the boards to a tee, other scenes I changed significantly based on the filming location. Regardless, the best thing about storyboards is that it gives you a first pass at making the film before committing valuable time and resources to production.
